The making of a sex symbol

In May 1994,0(+> gave what some may consider to be an unrevealing interview with Q magazine. While cautious at first,he eventually opened up (albeit slightly) disclosing that 'Prince' was a persona and that he was a very private person. This has been evident throughout his career where he has maintained a professional intimacy with his fans through his live performances while keeping his personal life distant from us.His mystique is carefully manufactured but never contrived. To keep the press from prying too closely he has often given cryptic replies to questions and feeds them stories of his eccentricity, through a 'paisley park employee' or 'close friend',which the tabloids lap up,eager to portray the 'potty Prince'.such quotes as "Looking for the ladder" and his infamous 1985/1995 Brits speeches may be dismissed by some as the ramblings of an eccentric, but made sense in the fullness of time.Sometimes it would seem that nothing less than divine intervention lends a hand in maintaining the shroud of mystery.

During the 1993 "My Name is Prince" was performed regularly,in the familiar chain-mail mask worn in the video. It could be argued that the strained, shouted vocal of the song was the main reason he lost his voice and had to cancel the second leg of the tour.To ensure there were no voice problems on the 1993 european tour,a 'live' "My name is Prince" was recorded and played at the start of each show.conveniently Mayte could act the part of Prince on the trapeze, hidden under the chain mask and full length coat, so as not to alert the fans, when the mask was discarded everyone cheered at the surprise beginning,0(+>'s reputation as a premier live act was unharmed as he didn't mime or risk his voice and the mystique remained as critics noted that he was never seen confirming "My name is Prince".If the chain mask hadn't been worn originally the whole situation would have been very different.

A common misconception about Prince is that he is a shy, uncommunicative person.proof of this would be his guitar world interviewing 1994,but this isn't always true.Read his first Rolling Stone interview in 1985.Given mainly to dispel any rumours started by his late bodyguard, Chick Huntsberry through his amusing expose of prince in The National Enquirer,he talked freely and extensively about his past,Minneapolis and his music. His second "Q" magazine interview was short but excellent,as they kept the conversation within the bounds of his contractual battle.the NME and Time Out on the other hand, tried to question him about relationships and vices etc. and he became cryptic and elusive.

A committed catholic who prays before every show? His religious beliefs have always been evident through his music, most obviously in songs such as "The Cross" and "God" but it is noticeable that he has never written a song where he has been unfaithful to a partner, only the reverse ("When you were mine irresistible bitch and Eye hate U" for example). Thus fidelity, a catholic vow, is important to him.

The ultimate confirmation to the world of Princes eccentricity came with his announcement of his name change to the symbol. While to many the symbol still seems to have been plucked out of thin air,the fans know that it is basically a blend of the biological signs for male and female gender. He has never been afraid to display his feminine side through his dress sense and music and thus he changed his name to a biological union of the sexes-a sex symbol-literally!!The basic symbol can be seen as far back as 1982 in the first 9 of the "1999" album cover artwork, also on the honda on the " Purple rain" album sleeve. The 0(+> symbol appeared properly on his 14th album. It has been likened to a man blowing his own trumpet amongst other things, but perhaps most significantly,it bears a definite similarity to the musical treble clef. perhaps princes name change was providing us with the answer to the musical equation he set up since he first recorded:

       o+v  +   treble_clef   = (SYMBOL)

     sexuality + music  =  (SYMBOL) !
